India now has a sub-Rs 10 lakh electric car – and it is from the Tata Motors stable, maker of the country’s largest selling EV with nearly 90% share of the market. Tata Motors launched the electric version of its hatchback Tiago on Wednesday, at an introductory price starting from Rs 8.49 lakhs, and going up to Rs 11.79 lakhs. The price will be applicable for the first 10,000 bookings that the company will receive for the car – with 2000 units out of this batch reserved for existing owners of a Tata Motors EV. Watch Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles discuss more in this interview with Alisha Sachdev, Assistant Editor, Mint.
Introduction: Tata Motors has been doubling down on its electric car launch offensive and while the Nexon EV Prime, Nexon EV Max and Tigor EV have established Tata’s credentials as an electric car brand, it was all originally expected to begin with the Tata Tiago EV. Better late than never and Tata seems to have figured out how to retain everything that makes the Tiago likeable while giving it the benefits of electrification.
The Tiago EV is available in standard and extended range variants with range figured of between 250-315km. It’s also reasonably peppy with a 0-60kmph time of under 6 seconds. In this video, we take a look at what’s gone into making the Tiago go electric and what the on paper data could mean in the real world.
Tata Tiago specifications:-
Battery : 24 KWh (1st variant) Range : 315 kms MIDC Range Battery : 19.2 KWh (2nd Variant) Range : 250 Kms Estimated MIDC Range Performance : 0-60 in 5.7 Seconds
The Tiago EV is based on Tata’s Zip Tron high-voltage architecture, much like the Tigor EV and Nexon EV. It uses a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and comes with a choice of two battery packs: 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh. They can be charged from 10 - 80% in 57 minutes using a DC fast charger. The Tiago EV is decently equipped too. The car comes with automatic projector headlamps, automatic climate control, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking camera, multi-mode regen and ZConnect connected car features.
